Best browser for gamers · Updated October 2026

Short answer: for most PC gamers, Opera GX. Of the five browsers we compared, it’s the only one that lets you cap how much RAM, CPU and bandwidth the browser takes while you play.

Don’t want to install anything new? Microsoft Edge is the best stay-put option, since it puts background tabs to sleep when a game starts. The full comparison is below.

How we picked

For a gamer, a browser mostly matters in one moment: when it’s open next to a game. So the main question was simple. Does the browser stay out of the game’s way, and how much control do you get over that? After that we looked at gaming extras, ad and tracker blocking, extension support and how painful it is to switch.

We didn’t rank on page-load benchmarks. All five browsers are fast enough that load speed rarely decides anything for gamers, and lab results shift with every update. What doesn’t shift is which settings each browser gives you, so that’s what this comparison is based on.

The 5 best browsers for gamers

1

Opera GX

Best overall for PC gamers

GX is built for one situation: a browser running next to a game. Its GX Control panel lets you set a RAM ceiling, a CPU cap and a bandwidth limit, and Hot Tabs Killer closes the heaviest tab with one click. Discord and Twitch sit in the sidebar, an ad blocker and a free browser VPN are built in, and GX Corner collects game deals, giveaways and release dates.

It runs on Chromium, so Chrome Web Store extensions work, and it imports bookmarks and passwords from the browser you use now.

Why it wins

  • The only browser here with RAM, CPU and bandwidth caps you set yourself
  • Discord and Twitch without extra windows
  • Ad blocker built in

Keep in mind

  • Busy look and sounds by default (both can be turned off)
  • The free VPN covers browser traffic only
  • Tight limits make background tabs reload
2

Microsoft Edge

Best if you don’t want to switch

Edge is already on every Windows PC, and it has a feature aimed at gamers: PC gaming boost puts tabs you’re not using to sleep as soon as a game starts. Sleeping tabs do the same during normal browsing. You’ll find both under Settings › System and performance. What you can’t do is set a fixed limit.

Good

  • Nothing to install on Windows
  • Reacts automatically when a game launches
  • Runs Chrome Web Store extensions

Keep in mind

  • No RAM, CPU or bandwidth caps
  • No built-in ad blocker
  • Frequent prompts for Microsoft services
3

Firefox

Best for privacy and ad-blocking add-ons

Firefox is the only browser in this list that isn’t built on Chromium. It unloads background tabs when your PC runs low on memory, blocks known trackers out of the box, and still supports the full uBlock Origin add-on, which Chrome dropped when it moved extensions to Manifest V3.

Good

  • Strong tracker blocking by default
  • Full uBlock Origin support
  • Independent engine

Keep in mind

  • No resource caps or gaming features
  • Tab unloading only starts when memory is already low
  • Uses its own add-on store, not the Chrome Web Store
4

Brave

Best built-in ad blocking

Brave is Chromium-based and ships with Shields, an ad and tracker blocker that works without any setup. Memory Saver frees up idle tabs. If clean pages matter more to you than gaming tools, it’s a good pick.

Good

  • Ads and trackers blocked out of the box
  • Memory Saver for idle tabs
  • Runs Chrome Web Store extensions

Keep in mind

  • No resource caps or gaming features
  • Extra built-in services you may want to switch off
5

Google Chrome

Best for Google sync and web apps

Chrome is supported by practically every web app and cloud gaming service, and it syncs neatly with Android and your Google account. Memory Saver has Moderate, Balanced and Maximum modes, and Performance Detection flags heavy tabs. For gaming specifically, though, it offers the least control in this list.

Good

  • Widest compatibility with web apps
  • Memory Saver with three modes
  • Seamless Google account sync

Keep in mind

  • No resource caps or gaming features
  • No built-in ad blocker
  • Full uBlock Origin is no longer available

If you play on an 8 or 16 GB PC or laptop, or stream while you game, the resource caps are the feature that makes the difference.

Does your browser actually affect game performance?

On its own, a browser won’t change your FPS. It starts to matter when the game and the browser compete for the same resources: RAM fills up and Windows starts swapping to disk, background tabs keep the CPU busy, or a download eats the bandwidth your game needs, and ping goes up.

You can check in half a minute. Start a game with your usual tabs open, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc and sort Task Manager by Memory.

Rule of thumb: on a 16 GB PC, a browser using more than 2 GB during a match, or sitting near the top of the CPU column, is worth capping. If it barely shows up, any browser on this list will do, and your stutter has another cause.

Switching to Opera GX takes about five minutes

  1. Install it

Download the installer and run it. No account needed. To keep your current default browser, click Options in the installer and untick the default-browser box.

  2. Import your data

Press Alt + P (Cmd + , on a Mac) and go to Synchronization › Import bookmarks and settings. Your old browser keeps everything; this only copies it.

  3. Set your limits

Click the speedometer icon in the sidebar to open GX Control. On a 16 GB PC, a RAM limit of 2 to 4 GB and a CPU limit of 25 to 30% are sensible starting points. Adjust from there.

FAQ

What is the best browser for gamers in 2026?

For most PC gamers, Opera GX, because it’s the only browser in our comparison that lets you set RAM, CPU and bandwidth limits. If you don’t want to install anything, Microsoft Edge is the next best choice thanks to PC gaming boost.

Is Opera GX better than Chrome for gaming?

For gaming, yes. Both run on the same Chromium engine, so everyday browsing feels much the same, but Chrome has no resource caps, no ad blocker and no gaming extras. Chrome is still the better fit if you depend on Google account sync with an Android phone.

Does a browser affect FPS?

Not directly. It only matters when the browser competes with the game for RAM, CPU time or bandwidth. That’s most common on 8 to 16 GB machines and when you stream or keep many tabs open.

What’s the best browser for a low-end gaming PC?

Opera GX with a tight RAM limit and Hard limit switched on. If you’d rather not switch, Edge with PC gaming boost enabled is the simplest alternative.

Which browser is best for cloud gaming?

Use one your service officially supports. Chrome and Edge are the most widely supported by cloud gaming services, so check your provider’s list of supported browsers before you switch.

Is Opera GX free and safe?

It’s free. The only paid add-on is VPN Pro, which you don’t need. Download it only from Opera’s website; the buttons on this page take you there. It’s built on Chromium and gets regular security updates.

Can I use Opera GX alongside Chrome or Edge?

Yes. Installing GX doesn’t remove or change your other browsers, and many people use it only while gaming.

Our pick

Opera GX is the browser that stays out of your game’s way, and you decide exactly how far.
