Best crypto exchanges in Europe after MiCA: who is still allowed to serve you

On 1 July 2026 the last MiCA transition window closed, and the European crypto market got a lot smaller overnight. Any platform without a CASP authorization under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation can no longer legally serve customers in the EU. Some big names had their licences ready. Others did not, and a few pulled out of the region altogether.

So the old question of “which exchange is best” now starts with a simpler one: which exchanges are still on the list? If you live in Poland, or just want to see how the licensed platforms compare on local payment methods, this Polish ranking of MiCA-licensed exchanges breaks it down by fees, PLN deposits and security. Below is the wider European picture.

What a MiCA licence actually means for you

A CASP authorization is granted by a national regulator in one member state and then passported across the whole EU. To get it, an exchange has to keep client assets separate from its own, hold minimum capital, run a complaints procedure and publish clear information about fees. That segregation rule is the direct answer to FTX, which lent customer money to its sister trading firm and collapsed in 2022 when everyone tried to withdraw at once.

A licence will not stop bitcoin from dropping 40 percent in a month. What it protects you from is a dishonest or reckless exchange, which historically has been the more common way people lost everything.

The exchanges that made the cut

Among the large global platforms, MiCA authorization is held by, among others, Bybit (through Bybit EU, licensed in Austria), OKX and Crypto.com (both through Maltese entities), Coinbase and Bitstamp (Luxembourg), Kraken (Ireland) and Bitpanda (Germany). Each can serve customers in every EU country without a separate local licence.

My top three for most European users are Bybit, OKX and Crypto.com. Bybit has some of the deepest spot liquidity in Europe, so even larger orders barely move the price. In February 2025 it was hit by one of the largest hacks in crypto history, losing around $1.5 billion in ETH, and it covered the full loss from its own funds without halting withdrawals. I find that more convincing than any security badge on a landing page.

OKX is the pick for active traders who care about maker and taker fees, and it bundles a capable Web3 wallet into the same app. Crypto.com wins on simplicity and its payment card, though instant buys come with a wider spread than on the other two.

Who is missing

Binance, the largest exchange in the world by volume, spent a long stretch outside the EU’s CASP register. Bitget only filed its application with Austria’s Financial Market Authority in June 2026. KuCoin was banned by the Austrian regulator in February 2026, and Gemini withdrew from the EU market in April. Status changes month to month, so check before you sign up anywhere.

How to verify a licence in five minutes

ESMA, the EU securities regulator, keeps a public register of authorized crypto-asset service providers. Search it by the legal entity name rather than the brand, because the licence belongs to the company. Bybit appears as Bybit EU GmbH, for example. Then check which services the authorization covers. MiCA defines ten, from custody to operating a trading platform, and a firm without the trading platform permission is not, legally speaking, an exchange.

ESMA also publishes a list of firms that national regulators have flagged for offering crypto services without authorization. If your platform shows up there, withdraw first and ask questions later.

Things MiCA does not cover

Leveraged derivatives fall under MiFID II rather than MiCA, which is why the EU versions of big exchanges often offer fewer futures products or ask you to pass a knowledge test first. Fully decentralized DeFi protocols sit outside the regulation as well. Once you move funds from a licensed exchange into a DeFi app, the protections described above no longer apply.

A note on local quirks

The rules are the same across the EU, but national implementation is not. Poland, for instance, still has no law designating its financial regulator as the MiCA authority after the president vetoed the bill three times. Polish users can still trade legally on any exchange licensed elsewhere in the EU; it is mainly local crypto firms that are stuck. Before you choose, check that the exchange supports your local currency and payment methods, and run a small deposit and withdrawal before moving serious money.
